The Cynosure Alex laser targets the melanin (pigment) in hair which creates heat to destroy the follicles. The system incorporates a tissue surface-cooling device, which continuously blows cold air on the skin surface at the site of the coming laser pulse. This reduces the pain of the laser pulse and decreases the chance of unwanted side effects.
The ND:Yag laser targets heme (the red in blood cells) to reach hair follicles on patients with darker skin. The laser energy is absorbed by melanin or heme, leaving skin unharmed while removing hair.
